Kindergarten
Kindergarten is an exciting year of growth, discovery, and growing independence. At Sisters Elementary School, students build the academic, social, emotional, and physical skills that create a strong foundation for their elementary years. The beginning of the year places special emphasis on building relationships, establishing classroom routines, and learning how to be part of a classroom community, practicing patience, taking turns, showing empathy, being responsible, and working together. As the year progresses, instruction becomes increasingly differentiated, including small-group learning designed to meet students where they are.
Through hands-on, collaborative, and engaging learning, kindergarten students develop foundational skills in literacy, writing, and mathematics. Students strengthen phonemic awareness, learn letter names and sounds, blend and decode words, build vocabulary and comprehension, and begin seeing themselves as readers, authors, and illustrators. In math, students develop number sense through counting, number recognition and relationships, addition and subtraction, shapes, and measurement. Students also build fine and gross motor skills and enjoy regular opportunities to explore music, art, physical education, and STEM.
Just as importantly, kindergarten helps children become confident and capable learners. From managing backpacks and belongings to developing friendships, solving problems, and taking greater responsibility for themselves, students learn skills that extend far beyond the classroom. Families are important partners in this first year of elementary school, and our kindergarten team looks forward to working together to help every child develop confidence, curiosity, and a lifelong love of learning.
