First Grade
First Grade
First grade is a year when young learners take exciting steps toward greater independence, confidence, and academic growth. At Sisters Elementary School, students continue building strong foundations in reading, writing, and mathematics while learning how to become thoughtful problem-solvers, responsible classmates, and enthusiastic learners. Reading is an especially important part of the first-grade experience, with students developing the skills and strategies they need to become increasingly confident readers. Creative approaches such as Secret Stories help students understand letter-sound relationships, while Rainbow Words support their growing ability to recognize and decode frequently used words.
Learning in first grade extends well beyond academics. Social-emotional learning is woven throughout the school day as students practice communication, problem-solving, teamwork, responsibility, respect, managing emotions, learning from mistakes, and developing positive relationships with others. Through GEM (Growing Early Mindsets) and Leader in Me, students are encouraged to develop positive character traits, set goals, celebrate growth, and understand that mistakes are an important part of learning. Families are important partners in this journey, with regular reading at home providing one of the best ways to reinforce classroom learning and help children develop a lifelong love of reading.
